What is Indica and Sativa?

Welcome to thegreengold.org, the cannabis for everyone site, where we provide a judgment free zone to learn and talk all about cannabis. Today I am going to be talking about the two most popular types of marijuana, indica and sativa. It is important to learn about these so that you can decide which strain will be best for you. As always this is not medical advice and is written for educational purposes only. If you are asking yourself “What is indica and sativa?”, then you have come to the right place!

For my coffee drinkers out there, you would be pretty upset if you went to Starbucks ordered a coffee and got a cup of chamomile tea, or tea that makes you “sleepy” instead. For those having trouble sleeping, you would be upset if the pharmacy gave you energy pills instead of sleeping pills. This is the same reason that a lot of people try marijuana one time, and then say it’s not for them. They simply got the wrong kind for them.

Everybody is different. As I stated in my previous article “Marijuana for beginners”, everybodies cannabinoid receptors are different. The good news is, there’s thousands of types of marijuana, so chances are there’s one out there for you. You may also need to reference this article before you decide what strain is best for you, and how you want to consume it.

Indica dominant.

We will start with the indica dominant strains of marijuana. Indica dominant means that it is at least 60% incica. I will go further into percentages when I discuss hybrids. When you think of indica I want you to imagine the color purple. Like lavender the color purple calms us, makes us feel relaxed, and in some cases sleepy. Simply put, indica dominant strains of cannabis have these same effects, making you feel relaxed, in some cases sleepy, and in other cases you can’t help but sleep after consuming it. It all depends on the strain that you get.

There are thousands of different marijuana strains throughout the world. This is because people have taken cannabis plants and crossbred them to create new strains. Throughout time many famous strains have been created. One of the most popular Indica dominant strains is Granddaddy Purple.

This strain is said to be the granddaddy of all marijuana, and is the perfect example of a well-balanced indica. It is sure to wash everything away, and more than likely to leave you laughing at something. This is also a strain that gives you good amount of a body effect. Between this, and the small amount of CBD this strain carries, makes it ideal for pain and inflammation! Refer to my previous article “What is CBD Oil For?“, to learn all about the benefits of CBD.

This is only one of the many different indica strains that could be the right one for you.

Sativa dominant.

Sativa dominant means that the strain is at least 60% sativa or more. With indica, I wanted you to think of the color purple, but with sativa I want you to imagine the color orange. Like oranges, the fruit, the color orange can make us feel energized and aware. Sativa is a lot like this, in fact it can help your brain wake up in a creative way. You will find yourself coming up with new ideas, and you will have the energy and drive to go after your ideas. You could be dragging your feet on a project or hobby, because you are just too spent from work and life. With the right sativa strain, you could find the motivation to start that project or enjoy a hobby.

Be wary of what people tell you. Preconceptions can subconsciously force you away from something that could really benefit you. A lot of people will tell you that sativa is an upper and indica is a downer. As I have explained so far, it’s not that simple. Some will tell you that sativas will make you paranoid and give you anxiety. This just means you need a different strain. More than likely, there is a strain that’s perfect for you.

A good place to start your journey, is with a hybrid.

Hybrid strains.

With a hybrid, you can really figure out what works best for you. I want you to think of the color green. Like all the plants in the world the color green can give you a sense of life. Hybrids are very much the same way. They can help you find a balance in life.

These fall right in the middle. Usually a hybrid is around 50% indica and 50% sativa. There’s a buffer area for these numbers though, seeing as these plants grow naturally. So, it’s hard to make them exactly 50/50. That’s why earlier I said, the dominant strains are at least 60% sativa or indica. This is not standard across the board. Different companies will have larger or smaller buffers. For now though, if it’s under 60% sativa or indica it is a hybrid.

One of my favorite hybrids right now is, Banana Sherbert! Mmm mmm, I cannot say enough about this strain. It is about as perfect as a hybrid gets. It starts off slow with bodily effects, then it moves to your head, and before you know it you will find yourself completely relaxed but ready for any conversation or task! this is why it’s the perfect starter strain, because you can feel the effects of both indica and sativa but in a milder sense. Leaving you able to decide which one you like more. Usually people just end up liking hybrids, and that’s all they will consume due to their diversity.

Indica, sativa, and hybrid, CBD rich cannabis.

Everything I discussed above pertained to THC rich cannabis. I’d like to shift gears and talk about the roles they play in CBD rich cannabis. To understand this a little better you may need to reference my past article “What is CBD Oil For?“.

CBD rich cannabis also comes in sativa, indica, or hybrid. As I discussed in my previous article, CBD rich cannabis doesn’t give you the same cerebral effects as THC rich cannabis. It also will not give you as intense of body effects either. CBD is basically a very mild form of cannabis. It presents a lot of the health benefits without the psychological effects.

Sativa CBD: Will help you feel subtly, uplifted, and can help with foggy brain.

Indica CBD: This will help relax your mind and body in subtle ways. If you are feeling anxious a dose of indica CBD could help you feel calmer.

Hybrid CBD: Just like with THC rich cannabis, it is going to give the effects of both indica and sativa CBD.

Hopefully this helped!

As always, I hope this information was helpful. Keep in mind, that just because you try one strain and you don’t like it, doesn’t mean cannabis isn’t for you. You just need to find the right strain. Some simple research could help you find the right strain. You could also leave me a comment below, and I can help you figure out what strain would be best for you. Just remember to take it slow and reap the benefits! Remember to visit my other article “Marijuana for Beginners“, to learn the different methods of consumption, and help you decide between indica, sativa, hybrid, or a mixture of all three, like I prefer.
