Welcome to thegreengold.org, the cannabis for everyone site, where we provide a judgment free zone to learn and talk all about cannabis. Today, I am talking about the pros and cons of smoking marijuana. As always, this is not medical advice, and is written for educational purposes only.
When discussing the pros and cons of consuming marijuana through smoking, I am going to compare it to the other forms of consuming marijuana. I feel like smoking marijuana has the biggest stigma around it. So, my goal as always is to help inform people. Humans have been smoking various different plants for hundreds if not thousands of years. Scientifically, we know that like other animals humans evolve over time. Tobacco is only as bad as it is because of how it is processed, what is added to it, and how it is smoked.
Hopefully, cannabis is never processed the same way. Things tend to be the best for you in their most natural form.
Pros of consuming marijuana through smoking it.
I feel the need to state here again, that this is not advice. If you have any health issues that have to do with your respiratory system, then I would suggest you consult your doctor before you inhale any kind of smoke. That goes for even bonfire smoke. In my opinion Bonfire smoke is worse for you to inhale than marijuana smoke. From what I have found, in my own research, is that cannabis has very little carcinogenic property when burnt. Wood actually puts off many carcinogens when burnt. Yet so many people sit around bonfires every night.
Smoking raw plant material straight from a marijuana plant is the most effective form of delivery for cannabinoids like THC and CBD. This is also the most effective way to deliver the terpenes I talked about in my article, “Marijuana for Beginners”. I also feel like it is the most consistent form of dosing for those using it medically. This is because it works in little to no time at all. So chances are, if you smoke marijuana and don’t feel the effects within 15 minutes, then it’s safe to say you need more. This takes some guess work out, that you may have with some other methods, like edibles for instance.
Cons of consuming marijuana through smoking it.
My biggest complaint, and what seems to be one of the biggest complaints, is the smell. I remember a time when I didn’t consume cannabis. I did not find it so pleasant when I smelled someone that had clearly just lit up. Obviously, there isn’t much we can do to make the smoke stink less. I personally use an air purifier, so that the air where I am smoking is filtered, and the smoke doesn’t stick around and set into me or other things. An exhaust fan could also be helpful for this as well. Then there is the personal hygiene route, in other words take a shower, use some good body spray, or even go outside and air out.
Other than the smell, as I touched on before. If you have a respiratory condition, it is probably best that you don’t inhale, not only marijuana smoke, but any kind of smoke really. The thing here is that marijuana smoke can be harsh. It’s not always smooth like cigarettes or cigars. More than likely, if you have smoked marijuana, then you have coughed. It’s definitely a con, and a good reason why people with certain respiratory conditions probably shouldn’t smoke it. However, there are many other forms of consuming cannabis for people with these conditions. Again, this is not medical advice and the best person to consult is your doctor.
Are smoking and vaping marijuana the same?
The obvious answer here is no. Again, the marijuana that you smoke is directly from the plant. When vaping marijuana, it had to go through a form of processing to get it into a vapable material. Then, it is delivered through heating that material, and creating a vapor instead of a smoke. a lot of people argue that vaping, since it is “smokeless”, is better for you than smoking plant material. There is not nearly enough evidence to support either side of the argument, but again things tend to be better for you when in their natural form.
What are the different ways to smoke marijuana
I’m going to touch softly here on the different ways to smoke marijuana. For a more in depth guide on smoking cannabis, and the different ways to do so, read my upcoming article, “What is The Best Way To Consume Cannabis?”. So, how do you smoke marijuana?
First, you have to grind it up! You can do this with your fingers, or you can use a hand grinder, since it can be hard to tear the marijuana into small enough bits to smoke. They even have electric grinders. Be careful, because too long in the electric grinder, and you will be smoking powdered weed. Now, you have to find something to smoke it in. You can smoke marijuana in something as simple as a tobacco corn cob pipe. This is not the method id suggest though. So, Let’s go into the most popular methods of smoking cannabis.
Roll it up: You can roll a joint. These are usually some kind of paper, I like to use hemp paper to keep it as organic as possible. You can also roll it into a blunt. Blunts are historically wraps made out of tobacco leaves. For people like me, that don’t like tobacco, they also make all natural hemp blunt wraps and other natural non tobacco leaf wraps. I have accumulated a bunch of options for you. Click here to check out some of my favorites!
Pack a Bowl: You ever see those colorful hippy looking shops in town? Go into one, they aren’t as sketchy as they seem. Chances are, the person behind the counter can help you find a piece that’s right for you. I personally like to use what’s officially a water pipe. It definitely helps smooth the hit down a lot!
Hopefully you learned something new!
Life is all about perspective. If you live based off of everyone else s perspective, then how will you ever know what’s right for you? What’s right or wrong for one person, isn’t always the same for someone else. Actually, more times than not, they aren’t the same at all. The point is, continue doing your own research, continue following my website, and you can make an educated decision for yourself. Because, whether you smoke cannabis or consume it in one of the many other ways, you are still enjoying the benefits!
So, take your journey slow, and comment below if you have any input or questions.

Firstly let me state that I am not medically qualified to know whether smoking marijuana is good or bad for you. I have read numerous articles on the subject and each argument has merits and debits. But what I do know relates to working with a pharmacist who lost her career after smoking it. When I first met her she stank of weed so much that even standing near her was disgusting. However, she assured me and my colleagues that her habit was purely recreational which it may have been until the day she prescribed the wrong drugs to a patient. This happened not once, but twice. You won’t be surprised to learn that the patients’ families reported her actions to the powers that be, and she was “relieved of her duties” within hours. Five years of university education went up in smoke. You decide whether smoking marijuana is good for you…
Thanks for sharing your story. Sadly our country is at a state where some people may have to choose between their work and their medicine. Nobody should ever be asked to leave a job because of their medication. Hopefully this changes in the future so that people in the medical field can enjoy the medical benefits of cannabis! I would also argue that just because this establishment didn’t allow smoking marijuana doesn’t mean it isn’t good for you. It just means it does not go well with certain careers. Definitely something for people that smoke and want to continue to smoke, to consider. If you like to, or even need to use cannabis for medical reasons, then from the sounds of it being a pharmacist isn’t the best career option.
There has been a stigma attached to the use of marijuana, mainly because of the legality of cannabis, and the myths surrounding THC and CBD. But after the legalisation of cannabis in many states and countries, it has become far more widely available, and also more acceptable to consume it.
As far as I know cannabis is legal if the THC content is less than 0.3%. But is the smoking of marijuana also legal? Is the “hit” from smoking marijuana slower or faster than using CBD drops or gummies?
I have always thought that when smoking marijuana, it is very difficult to know how much CBD and THC you are consuming. So how can you measure the THC and CBD in marijuana when you are smoking it? Thank you for clarifying.
Hey there! Just checked out your article on the pros and cons of smoking marijuana, and I’ve got to say, it’s a real eye-opener! 🌿 You’ve done a fantastic job laying out both sides of the coin in a balanced and informative way. I appreciate how you’ve delved into the potential benefits like pain relief and relaxation, while also shedding light on the drawbacks such as potential memory impairment and lung health concerns. One thing that got me thinking though: Do you think the legalization of marijuana has influenced how society views its pros and cons? It seems like such a hot topic these days, and I’m curious about your take on its evolving perception. Keep sparking these important conversations—I’ll definitely be revisiting this article for more insights!
