Is Marijuana Legal in Ohio?

Welcome to thegreengold.org, the cannabis for everyone site, where we provide a judgment free zone to learn and talk all about cannabis. We have another state looking to legalize marijuana for adult use. In this article I’m going to talk about the ins and outs of the cannabis market in Ohio, and the current adult use ballot issue. This is not medical or legal advice, and is written for educational purposes only.

Is marijuana legal in Ohio? the answer to this, is yes and no. medical marijuana is currently legal in Ohio, for those that hold a medical marijuana card. Adult use, or recreational marijuana, is not legal in Ohio currently. However, it is on the ballot, and you are starting to see a large selection of “legal THC” products in Ohio. I will go further into what legal THC is, later in this article. For now, we are going to start with the form of marijuana that is currently legal in Ohio.

Medical Marijuana.

Medical marijuana has been legal in Ohio since 2016. To get marijuana legally in Ohio, you have to have a qualifying medical condition, such as chronic pain, PTSD, and IBS. You have to visit an Ohio licensed medical marijuana doctor to receive a recommendation. This Doctor, then looks at your past medical records and determines if you qualify for medical marijuana.

The doctor, then sends the recommendation to the state, and you receive your card usually within a week or less. You may also have to register, and pay a fee with the state, before receiving your card. Usually, the doctor will be able to tell you, what your next steps are.

Finally, you receive your card in the mail, or in most cases a digital copy to your email. If you get your copy emailed to you, I highly recommend just taking a screen shot of it on your phone. Then put it in a special folder, so that you can pull it up, generally easy, when you get to the dispensary. I put mine in a folder on my phone that has other important documents, like my fishing license. Once you’ve got your card, you can go to the dispensary, and legally purchase marijuana.

Adult use marijuana.

Adult use, better known as recreational marijuana, is marijuana that is legal for adults, usually 21 or older, to purchase and consume. So, if marijuana is recreationally legal in your state, then you don’t need a medical card to purchase marijuana of any kind. You do however, need to have a state issued ID.

You simply take your ID to the dispensary. They register you with your state ID, then let you into the dispensary to shop. The people behind the counter are called bud-tenders. Bud-tenders, can help you with selecting the best cannabis for you. They can also tell you how much you can legally buy per day in your state. If you are a beginner, then you probably won’t be buying anywhere near the limit anyways.

Other forms of legal cannabis in Ohio.

There are other forms of legal cannabis, that you can purchase in Ohio. These are usually hemp derived products, that either contain CBD, or a legal kind and amount of THC. There are two classifications for cannabis. In the legal world, the two classifications are hemp plants and marijuana plants.

Marijuana plants are THC rich and have greater cerebral effects. Hemp is usually rich in CBD and other cannabinoids. However, cultivators have been able to breed hemp plants with small amounts of THC in them, and legally sell it in states that allow it. Ohio is one of those states.

Types of THC;

– Delta 9 THC: This is the THC that you will find the most in marijuana. This is the compound that carries the most psychoactive properties of the cannabis plant. The marijuana that people have been using for hundreds of years, is Delta 9 THC rich cannabis. This will get you high, but will also deliver all the other medical benefits of the cannabis plant. These plants often still carry all the other cannabinoids.

– Delta 8 THC: also known as legal THC, or at least one of them. It is legal, because it is derived from hemp instead of marijuana. Hemp is legal in Ohio, and marijuana is not. Delta 8 will give you heightened cerebral effects, compared to CBD rich hemp. However, you usually won’t feel much cerebral effect after the first couple times of consuming it. after this, its more useful for the other beneficial compounds in the cannabis plant. You can find delta 8 products at most gas stations and smoke shops.

When will adult use be legal in Ohio?

Adult use is on the ballot for the November elections, in Ohio. It is going to be issue number 2. So, if you support recreational marijuana for adults, and live in Ohio, then go out and vote. Early voting has begun, and the official day to vote is November 7th.

The bill would allow adults 21 and older to poses over 2 ounces of marijuana and 15 grams of concentrate (vapes, dabs, and oils). The bill, would also allow one person to grow 6 plants. With a maximum of 12 plants per household, for personal use. So, not only could you legally buy safe marijuana, but you can grow your own marijuana as well.

This will also create an opportunity for patients that need marijuana, but cant get it due to Ohio strict list of qualifying medical conditions. It will also provide it for people that don’t have medical insurance, to help them get to a doctor in the first place. Another thing it will help do, is keep Ohio’s tax dollars in Ohio. Right now, a lot of people have to travel out of state for their marijuana. Legalizing in Ohio, would bring all that money back to Ohio and keep it here.

Hopefully this was helpful.

Marijuana is illegal in Ohio, unless you have a medical. If you have one of the few ailments they have listed, then you can qualify to buy marijuana legally in Ohio. If not, then maybe you could benefit from some legal, hemp derived THC options. However, that all could change soon, and adult use could become legal in Ohio. Then anyone over 21, will be able to legally buy all forms of cannabis in Ohio.
